FACT: All communication that occurs on the eBay platform between members will always appear on the Messages tab in My eBay. The only way to buy a vehicle on eBay is by logging into your eBay account with a user ID/email address and password, and checking one of the following is true:
FACT: eBay does NOT offer any of these programs or refunds for vehicle purchases on the UK site. If the seller tells you about any of these, this is likely fraud, and you should walk away. To learn more about the eBay Money Back Guarantee, please click here. In addition, the eBay Vehicle Purchase Protection (VPP) plan is only offered in the US and Canada (additional terms and conditions apply)
FACT: Common payment methods used in legitimate purchases are cash in person, PayPal, credit card, money order, cashier's/personal cheque, or financial loans. Criminals may tell you the eBay Financial Centre will manage the transaction and you can deposit money into an eBay Holding/Escrow Account. Fraudsters may tell you the money not be released until you are satisfaction with the purchase. This is FRAUD; eBay does NOT offer Escrow or other types of holding accounts. Some Sellers may ask you to submit a deposit in order to secure the vehicle and so they will no longer pursue other buyers. It is important that both parties are in agreement with the terms of the deposit and there is an understanding if this deposit is or is not refundable should you decide not to complete the purchase. It is always advisable to provide the money once you have viewed the item in person and wish to continue in the transaction. In addition, although sellers may request bank transfers or wire payment, proceed with caution with these methods. It is always a good idea to inspect the vehicle before sending money. You may want to provide payment at the time you pick up the vehicle.
FACT: On eBay, as the buyer, you typically are responsible for picking up the vehicle or hiring a shipping company. Some eBay Motors Dealers may offer free shipping. To determine if the listing is from a Private Seller or Dealer please refer to the field labeled \"For Sale By\" within the description tab under the Item specifics section. The Motors Dealer logo will also appear for verified members next to the user ID/feedback. Click here to view the logo.
eBay's Vehicle Protection Program covers only certain vehicle transactions that are completed on eBay.ca and eBay.com. If a Craigslist or other non-eBay seller promises you the eBay protection plan, this is fraud, and you should walk away. Here are some common warning signs to watch out for:
Vehicle Purchase Protection, or VPP, provides protection against certain losses associated with fraud, up to a maximum amount of your purchase price paid (not exceeding $100,000) for purchase of an eligible vehicle on eBay.ca or eBay.com, or through the eBay mobile app. The types of fraud that are generally covered include:
Vehicle Purchase Protection is automatically included at no additional cost when you complete the purchase of an eligible vehicle on eBay.ca, eBay.com, or the eBay mobile app. VPP is not an insurance policy, a warranty, a solution for buyer's remorse, or a substitute for buyer diligence (i.e. pre-purchase research and inspection). We encourage you to perform the appropriate research, and exercise proper care and judgement in the purchase of any vehicle.
Upon eBay's review of your reimbursement request, you will be provided with instructions to submit your request directly to the VPP Administrator. The VPP Administrator will contact you within a few business days to obtain additional details about your request, and to discuss the appropriate next steps. You will be required to substantiate your request by providing, for example, damage estimates from no fewer than two approved service facilities (at your expense), or allowing the VPP Administrator to inspect the vehicle at any time.
In each case, including the examples outlined below, the maximum amount you may receive is limited to the purchase price, not exceeding $100,000, for items purchased on or after September 1, 2016. For items purchased prior to September 1, 2016, your eligible vehicle purchase is protected for up to $50,000 or the vehicle purchase price, whichever is lower.
If you pay for the vehicle, but after taking possession discover that there is an undisclosed lien against the title, you will receive the lesser of: (i) the purchase price paid, and (ii) the amount necessary to clear the undisclosed lien, up to $100,000.
If you suffer a loss from undisclosed damage to a qualifying component of a vehicle you purchased, you will receive the cost of repairs determined by the lower of all replacement/repair estimates from two approved service facilities.
If you suffer a loss based on a year, make, model, or odometer misrepresentation (above 5,000 miles, in vehicles less than 20 years old), the devaluation amount of the vehicle will be determined by the difference between the purchase price and the NADA clean retail value (see nadaguides.com).
In cases of extensive devaluation, or where part replacement costs are a significant percentage of the purchase price, the VPP Administrator may exercise their option to reimburse the purchase price (not exceeding $100,000), and take possession of the vehicle. If you refuse this offer, then the VPP Administrator may offer you a cash settlement of a discounted percentage of the purchase price.
If you qualify for a reimbursement and the VPP Administrator takes possession of the vehicle or the vehicle is returned to the seller, you will be reimbursed for the original shipping fees up to a maximum of $800, provided that you originally used a licensed shipper to transport the vehicle from the seller to you.
eBay may terminate VPP or modify these Terms and Conditions with or without notice to you. The Terms and Conditions of the VPP program specified on this page at the time that you purchased your vehicle will apply. It is your responsibility to periodically review these Terms and Conditions to ensure you are familiar with them at the time of your purchase.

Consider asking for a professional inspection of the car if they cannot provide any inspection documentation. Also, make sure that the vehicle is in good condition, the title is free and clear and that the price is within your budget.
Typically, the buyer is the one responsible for retrieving the vehicle whether that be driving it yourself or having it shipped. On occasion, eBay dealerships may offer free shipping services.
